Can DCCC purse strings get congressional incumbents superdelegtes to decide

DCCC Head Urges Superdelegates to Decide by July 1

The head of House Democrats’ campaign operation told reporters Monday that he wants undecided superdelegates to get off the fence by July 1 to decide the party’s nominee.

“I do support [Democratic National Committee Chairman] Howard Dean’s position to make a decision no later than July 1,” Rep. Chris Van Hollen, chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, told reporters at a breakfast hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.

Van Hollen said he feels particularly bullish about Democrats’ chances of bucking historical trends and gaining seats this November, but acknowledged that the presidential race is “the biggest variable” in their ability to achieve that goal. He repeatedly expressed concerns about the increasingly negative tone of the nomination fight between Sens. Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama.
