At a private meeting today, New York City Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg offered to host a “welcome back” event for Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, which she “gladly accepted,” a Clinton aide said.

The aide said it would not be a fund-raiser to help Mrs. Clinton with retiring her approximately $23 million debt from her presidential campaign; she owes about $12 million to consultants and vendors, and owes herself $11 million for the personal loans that she made during the Democratic primaries this year.

But the event – intended to welcome her back to her full-time gig after the 16-month campaign – could serve as one more way to remind New Yorkers about the debt carried by their senator, and spur some of them to write checks.
